Getting to Tokyo - Nov 18, 1963

(from Dad's missionary journal)

"November 18, 1963

Five of us with myself as group leader left Salt Lake City, Utah aboard a United Airline bound for San Francisco where we arrived at 7:33 a.m. We spent about four hours there and then boarded a Japan Airlines jet and headed West to Honolulu, Hawaii. We departed at 1:00 p.m. and enroute had lunch which included among other things, octopus, seaweed, and sweet beans. We arrived in Honolulu 4:00 p.m. and departed at 5:30 p.m. for Tokyo, Japan. We crossed the dateline and arrived at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 19 where we were greeted by (an) Elder to instruct us and show us arround Tokyo during our stay in the mission home, and Mission President Anderson and Sister Anderson."

Mission Home in SLC - Nov, 1963

(from Dad's missionary journal)

November - 1963 - Mission Home in SLC

"November 11, 1963

I entered the mission home at 3:00 a.m. and was aroused at 6:00 a.m. to begin my mission. My companion for the next two weeks was to be an Elder Brent Gehring, both of us going to the Northern Far East Mission along with Elders Foster, Johnston, and Packham.

November 13, 1963

I was set apart as a missionary by LeGrande Richards of the Council of the Twelve. He made one comment that, though of no great value made great significance in my mind. He told us that while he was yet in the process of learning the language in Holland he got to where he loved to hear the dogs bark. Why? Because the dog's bark is just the same over there, and it is just about the only sound you'll hear you can understand.

November 15, 1963

I was privileged to go through the Salt Lake Temple and take out endowments for the dead. At the conclusion of the session we held a question and answer session in the Assembly Hall of the Temple. We got to attend another session in the temple the following day and do more work for the dead.

November 17, 1963

The new missionaries had a testimony meeting on Temple Square. I was one of about seventy who got to bear testimony in the three hour meeting. Thus concluded a week in the Mission Home with 165 other missionaries."

Thoughts When I Received My Missionary Call

"Now behold a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men. Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless (before) God at the last day. Therefore if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work; for behold the field is white already to harvest, and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul; And faith, hope, charity, and love, with an eye single to the glory of God qualify him for the work. Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence. Ask and ye shall receive; knock and it shall be opened unto you. Amen.
D and C 4:1-7
