Mission Home in SLC - Nov, 1963

(from Dad's missionary journal)

November - 1963 - Mission Home in SLC

"November 11, 1963

I entered the mission home at 3:00 a.m. and was aroused at 6:00 a.m. to begin my mission. My companion for the next two weeks was to be an Elder Brent Gehring, both of us going to the Northern Far East Mission along with Elders Foster, Johnston, and Packham.

November 13, 1963

I was set apart as a missionary by LeGrande Richards of the Council of the Twelve. He made one comment that, though of no great value made great significance in my mind. He told us that while he was yet in the process of learning the language in Holland he got to where he loved to hear the dogs bark. Why? Because the dog's bark is just the same over there, and it is just about the only sound you'll hear you can understand.

November 15, 1963

I was privileged to go through the Salt Lake Temple and take out endowments for the dead. At the conclusion of the session we held a question and answer session in the Assembly Hall of the Temple. We got to attend another session in the temple the following day and do more work for the dead.

November 17, 1963

The new missionaries had a testimony meeting on Temple Square. I was one of about seventy who got to bear testimony in the three hour meeting. Thus concluded a week in the Mission Home with 165 other missionaries."
